How to Hit a Chip Shot

Posted In: Golf Tips by Amy

Chip shot is a shot typically played from very close to the green, usually within a few yards of the putting surface, in which the ball is struck using a club (usually 6-iron to PW) played back in the player’s stance. Such a combination produces a shot that is in the air very briefly before settling to the putting surface and rolling toward the cup.

How To Hit A Chip Shot And Save Stokes
Shaping your chip. During the chip shot, the ball should spend as little time in the air as possible and most of its time rolling on the green. Pick a landing spot on the green and then read the rest of the shot as you would a putt. Chipping to your chosen spot should result in a putt-like roll to the hole.

Club choice. Like most short game shots, the chip is a matter of feel. Practice will give you an idea of what golf clubs is most effective, taylormade r9 driver or ping g15 driver? In general, the more green between your ball and the hole, the less lofted your club should be.

The set up. To position yourself for a chip shot, narrow your stance slightly and use a more open setup with your feet point 15 or 20-degrees left of perpendicular to the line of the shot. The ball should line up on the inside of your left heel or slightly more centered. Take your normal grip, but choke down on the cheap golf clubs by an inch or two.

The swing. During a chip, your back swing should be much shorter than normal—rarely will the back swing on a chip go even waist high. Now, accelerate through the ball as normal with a smooth, sweeping stroke. A well-struck chip will jump from the club head, land on the green and roll toward the cup at the speed of a putt made from the same distance.

Followings are some mental mistakes that golfers make. At least, these are the ones they talk about in the bar after a round of golf or in the office the next day. Although I’d normally want to know a lot more about the individual before offering advice, I’ve included my initial suggestions as to how to address each problem with golf psychology.

Tightening up on your difficult shots

Learn to use hypnosis or an NLP anchoring technique to relax before planning any shot. Then control the inevitable internal dialogue with a post-hypnotic suggestion to relax every time you play a shot or stroke a putt. Do not falter when holding your golf equipment.

Dwelling on your mistakes and bad shots

The key thing is to learn from your mistakes, bad luck and plain bad shots before releasing them to the past where they can trouble you no more. Once again, you can make sure you do this with the help of post-hypnotic suggestions using self-hypnosis. Tiger Woods handles this well despite, or maybe with the help of, his temper tantrums when he hits a bad or unlucky shot. Once you release a bad shot like this, you’re free to hit the next one to the best of your ability, as if you had never hit the bad one.

Telling yourself what NOT to do

I’m sure you’ve said to yourself, “Now, don’t hit it into the water” or it could have been the water, the trees or the wrong side of the green you were trying to avoid. Your unconscious mind doesn’t know how to not do something. If I ask you to not think of a blue elephant, you unconsciously have to imagine one – you probably just did! If you want to give yourself or anyone else a suggestion, phrase it using positive progressive language. It would be better to say, “Now, let’s hit this ball onto the fairway over there.”

Letting your internal dialogue run wild

Get a good hypnotist to install a post-hypnotic suggestion that you go into a trance as you step into each shot or use self-hypnosis to achieve the same result. Whichever way, you’re allowing your unconscious mind to get on with playing the shot to the best of your technical ability while keeping your chattering conscious mind out of the action. That seems to work for Tiger Woods.
Worrying about the Yips

This is basically a mental tightening up on a specific difficult shot, so I’d handle it in a similar by learning to use hypnosis or an NLP anchoring technique to relax before planning any putt.

Here are some things to consider that should lead to you playing a more consistent golf fairway shot:

Preparation:

When you’ve just hit a good tee shot you’re usually delighted. In fact, you’re usually so delighted that you can’t wait to get onto the fairway and make the next shot. This can lead to a lack of concentration, remain focused. Assess the lie. Is it on a downslope, is it a tight lie, or a fluffy lie? Try and visualise your next shot. It’s okay knowing how you’re going to play it, but it’s just as important to know where you’re going to put it. Remember your alignment. Look down the fairway and find a target where you want your shot to finish.

Club Selection:

It’s important to know what golf clubs to use in certain circumstances. The fairway woods can be an effective weapon in making a good golf fairway shot. They’re great for giving you the chance to get down in two on long par fours for instance. A lot of amateur golfers don’t like to use these clubs as they find they have a tendency to top the ball, or they try and get too underneath it, to get height. To counteract this, try moving the ball back a couple of inches inside your left heel and hitting down on it slightly

Short Irons:

Don’t be tempted into trying to swing too hard when using a short iron. It’s far better to take an extra club and keep the swing smooth and controlled. A properly hit short iron should take a fairly large divot after contact, and apply backspin to the ball. The bottom of the club head of discount golf clubs should be grounded centrally behind the ball. You should also stand a little closer to the ball and adopt a more open stance.

Middle Irons:

To gain more accuracy, try using a more upright stance and a steeper swing with these clubs. You could also try tightening your grip. Don’t swing your arms around your body when you play the shot. Instead swing your arms skyward on the backswing.

Long Irons:

These are the clubs that most amateurs find the hardest to use with any consistency. Your long iron shot should be like your swing for your woods. The shot should be played with a slow take back and a sweeping easy swing. You could also try placing the ball slightly forward in your stance, with your head a little in front of the club head at the address.

If you remember to use this advice then your bad golf fairway shots should become a thing of the past.
