At a time when the premium golf ball market seems more crowded than the 19th hole on a 2-for-1 drinks night, the Penta TP comes along and not only makes a name for itself, but also raises the bar.

Let’s peel back the layers: First – off the driver – distance. Across a section of golfers during testing, distance gains ranged from 3 to 13 yards with the golf clubs depending on the player. That’s significant.

Next, with mid- and long irons the ball is workable – both for mid- and low-handicappers. Should novices leave this ball alone? No way – it’s too much fun for the whole golfin’ family!

Lest we forget about spin – the Penta has plenty of it. Off mid- and short irons is where this ball shines. Shots for low handicappers hit inside 50 yards showed a willingness to sit right where they landed. For the higher handicap (15+), that group saw a shorter roll-out on balls that hit the green compared with other premium balls.

As for putting, I found the Penta seemed to hold the line better than some other brands. Interesting that the ball immediately felt a certain heft, even though it conforms to the mandated weight of a golf ball. As for feel off the putter, it’s soft but not a marshmallow feel.

Does a 5-piece ball work for your game? By all accounts, it looks like that “5″ is a winning number. Give it a try.

Golf ball manufacturers generally break their products into two distinct groups – the two piece balls and the multi layer balls. But to different types, brands and sizes, you have so many choices. Each golf ball manufacturer makes a number of different types of balls all designed with different playing styles, different types of players and different price brackets. So as a consumer how do you go about selecting the best golf balls for your needs? First, look at the two types of golf balls.

The two piece golf ball is the traditional distance ball. This means that it is designed to travel. The two piece ball consists of the core and a cover and as a result of this design, the two piece balls travel the maximum distance no matter what the swing speed is. As a player, you will generally hear an audible click when you make contact with this ball when you hit it with your golf equipment. Because these balls get less sidespin they tend to fly straighter even if they are hit of the heel or toe. Two piece balls are generally cheaper than the multi layer balls.

The multi layer ball on the other hand is either a three piece or four piece ball and is made up of a core, a mantle, and then a cover. These are generally more expensive balls. They usually feel softer to hit and have a higher spin rate because of this softness. In the higher spinning balls, the mantle helps to transfer the energy to the core whereas in a lower spinning ball the mantle will help to reduce the spin off a player who chooses to use a driver or a longer club.

So how do you work out which ball will best suit and even improve your game? Firstly you need to determine what type of player you are or want to become. Players that are mostly concerned with getting more distance off the tee are better off opting for the two piece ball. Where as players who want more control in the ball should opt for the multi layer ball. The best way to decide between the two is to head to the gold range and hit a few buckets to get a feel for both types.

History of golf ball

Posted In: Golf Talk by Sylvia

The game of golf originated on the fields of Scotland more than two hundred years ago. You can imagine how different the golf equipment was back in the 1700s! Of course, it’s all changed dramatically since those early years. The golf ball itself had undergone revolutionary changes, until finally taking on the hard, dimpled form that we all know today.

The earliest golf balls were made of wood. Of course, the life span of these simple balls was relatively short, as they’d crack and split after just a few hits. With time, golfers devised a new type of ball, filled with feathers and bound in leather. It was a revolutionary idea that quickly grew in popularity.

The next era in the history of the golf ball came with something called the “guttie”. These balls were created with a type of natural latex known as gutta-percha. With further adaptations, the “guttie” began to resemble the type of ball we still use today, with a synthetic rubber core encased in a white plastic cover.

In the early 1990s, changes began to take shape in the structure of the golf ball. Golfers were able to choose from three different types: the “control” golf ball, “distance” golf ball and “spin” golf ball. The latter typically provides highest quality, while the distance ball is usually priced the lowest.

In an effort to launch the simple golf ball to great new heights, technology has also found ways to alter compression not just golf clubs. A golf ball’s “compression” is a measurement that defines the degree of deformation that the ball presents after several hits. Many golfers mistakenly believe that using a ball with higher compression will add distance to their tee and fairway shots. Usually, there is a significant decrease in accuracy after a round of play. This may be attributed to the deformation of the ball after several strokes. The accuracy of the hits is affected, but the actual distance that the ball achieves is not.

Golfers were able to choose from only two primary types of golf balls until just a few years ago. The options were basic and inexpensive, so there wasn’t a huge demand for used golf balls. As with all products, however, technology has taken over and demand and prices have increased.

Golf has changed little over the last 300 years, but the world of golf equipment continues to evolve. From golf etiquette to golf balls, there’s always something new to learn about this age-old sport.
